Engine Driven Welding Machine Features

Engine driven welders are primarily used for powering several different types of welding equipment. Each of these unique welding packages provides their own type of weld that separates it from the others. Some of the types of welders that engine driven welding machines power, include:
  • Stick Welding Machines – Stick welding is the most widely utilized welding process. It uses a fixed length electrode and an electric power source to join numerous types of metals. The essential piece of the covered electrode consists of a solid metal rod that is covered with mineral compounds and metal powders. A binding agent is then used to help the coverings adhere to the surface of the electrode.
  • TIG Welders – TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding utilizes a non-consumable tungsten electrode that delivers the current to the welding arc. The tungsten and weld puddle are protected and cooled with an inert gas, typically argon.
  • MIG Welding Equipment – MIG welding provides a highly productive way to weld since the user does not have to frequently change the rods. MIG welding also allows the user to produce impressive welds without the concern of cleanup, chipping or brushing of the weld.
  • Flux-Cored Welding Machines – Flux-core is a wire welding process in which a continuous hollow wire electrode is fed through the welding gun into the weld joint. Self-shielded flux-cored welding differs from MIG welding in that it doesn’t require an external shielding gas, such as carbon dioxide or argon, to protect the weld pool from contamination.

Choosing an Engine Driven Welder

When choosing an engine driven welder machine, there are several factors you should consider. The type of welder that you get is ultimately reflective of the job functions that you need it to perform. Before purchasing a new machine, consider these factors:

Welding Machine Application

What do you want your engine driven welder to be able to do? Many choose a machine that can perform a variety of processes, usually Stick, Flux Cored, MIG, and TIG. Some may look for other applications like pipe welding or arc gouging. You should also consider the material being welded, as well as the size of the job. Whether you’re welding a mild steel plate or participating in a small repair job will affect what kind of welder you are looking for.

The Engine Driven Welding Machines Power Capacity

Depending upon what processes you would like your welder to perform, it will require differing wattage levels. Engine Driven welders offer power from 5,000 to 20,000 watts. If you need to perform simultaneous activities, you may need a higher wattage. Running power tools, for example, will alter the number of watts you need. To run an air compressor, you need at least 8,200 watts.

Engine Drives Fuel Consumption

Gasoline, diesel, and propane engines are used in conjunction with an engine driven welding machine. Each of these options offers different benefits and disadvantages. Gas engines tend to offer a lower product cost and are often a smaller size. Diesel engines, however, use less fuel and have longer lives. Different jobs can require different engine types.

An Engine Driven Welders Potential for Portability

If the job you’re performing requires your engine driven welder to be portable, a gasoline engine would be the best decision. They tend to be smaller and easier to carry or lift inside the work area.
